South Prairie Oyster Bar

The South Prairie Oyster Bar , at 650 S. Main St, is a real Grapevine treasure. It’s part of a dying breed of restaurants – small establishments where the owner does just about everything and really gets to know the customers.

We’ve been there on several occasions and always been impressed with the laid back atmosphere and the friendly attention from the owner. He waits on just about all the tables and is quick to chat with everyone and make them feel like family.   There are very few tables and so are easily handled by one or two servers.  It’s a tiny place, but big on service and simply doing what they do well.

The menu is not very extensive, and if you aren’t a fan of fried seafood, you’ll limit it even further.  Again, this is what they do well.  Their catfish and shrimp baskets are favorites of ours, and the hushpuppies that are served with them are outstanding.  They have lunch specials for $5.99 which are hard to beat.  I would also recommend the gumbo and the po’boys.

The building is small and standalone, at the south end of Main Street, so it would be easy to miss.  Stop in here, don’t just drive on by.  :)
